Clean teeth are a sign of good health. It is important to keep the teeth in good health. For this, they should be kept clean and free from bacteria. This can be achieved by brushing the teeth at least twice daily.

We consume different types of food. Mostly, foods we consume contain carbohydrates (sugars and starches). Certain species of bacteria like streptococci mutans and lactobacillus live in the mouth. They thrive on these foods. They form a yellow translucent layer on the surface of the tooth called the bacterial plaque. They feed on the food present in the mouth, producing acids and other waste products. Some of the waste products have a foul smell. This foul smell is the reason for bad breath.  Over a period of time, the acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in Decay tooth or dental caries.

Tooth decay is the commonly known term for dental caries. It is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. Caries is common in children because they consume lots of chocolates. Cavities are formed in the teeth as a result of the damage done to teeth by caries. Almost all of us have tooth cavities. Molars have deep grooves and pits and these are frequent sites for decay.Tooth decay is painful and can lead to infections in surrounding tissues and tooth loss if not treated properly.

A dentist can detect tooth decay by a dental X-ray. Once the decay is detected, it can be removed and a filling can be placed. The tooth can be protected by a crown or cap.

Tooth decay can be prevented by brushing the teeth with fluoride toothpaste. This prevents the formation of dental plaque. A visit to the dentist every six months will help detect any decay in the tooth. Nibbling and snacking unnecessarily must be avoided as it provides the bacteria with enough opportunities to attack food in the mouth.
